Every month I’m breaking down my 12 Steps To Success – the strategies from my book Power Lift Your Career that will help you to achieve everything you want in your life. They worked for me, they worked for hundreds of my clients, and I know that they will work for you too. 

I look at this a lot like choreography; you simply take one step after the other and at the end of all the steps you will be able to get from wherever you are to where you want to be. All you have to do is stick with it!

Last month we looked at the first step, which was all about gaining clarity on what you want. It was a goodie, so if you missed it, you can catch up here.

This month we’re keeping the momentum going with a deep dive into one of my absolute favourite topics: mindset! 🧠


So, last month you decided what you wanted to achieve. This month is all about making sure that you have the right mindset to get there. And how do you do that? Well, you start thinking like a winner, of course!

Here’s the thing: the only difference between you and the people who are where you want to be is that they have learned how to think differently. They are able to take control of their thoughts and focus all their energy on getting what they really want. But the great news is that this way of thinking isn’t just reserved for Olympic athletes and tech billionaires – it’s something that YOU can learn to do too. 

Take control of your thoughts

The fact of the matter is, your thoughts can make you or break you. They can affect every aspect of your life. It may sound obvious, but what I’ve discovered is that the more positive thoughts we have, the more good things we see in life, the more positive we become, and the more likely we are to get to where we want to be. And, conversely, the more negative thoughts we have, the more bad things we see, the more negative we become and the less likely we are to become a winner.

So many of us go through our lives assuming that we are slaves to our negative thoughts and powerless against them. But the thing is, we really can change our thoughts and take complete control of them – it all just comes down to self awareness.

Flip the script

The key to creating a winning mindset involves monitoring your thoughts carefully and then turning every negative thought into a positive one. This this little exercise can help you do this:

  • The next time a negative thought pops up in your head – no matter whether it’s about yourself, someone else or a situation you’re in – simply notice it and pause.

  • Decide to get rid of that thought – choose to push it out of your brain. This takes real focus, so what I do is verbalise it and shout, ‘Out!’ 

  • Once you’ve let go of your negative thought, it’s time to replace it with something positive. For example, if you were thinking negatively about a situation that you find yourself in, start to consider what you can do to turn it around or take back control. If you were thinking negatively about a person, use all the strength you can muster to think of that person with empathy or compassion. 

Do this again and again over the coming month and I guarantee that it will soon become a habit. Before you know it, you’ll be approaching the world in a completely different way … a winning way!

I believe that every single one of us has the potential to win at life. Once we’ve changed our mindset, it will be time to build our confidence, and that’s what we’ll be looking at next month in Step 3, so don’t miss it.
